The Coathangers
w/Glove, and Las Nubes
Tuesday, September 17
The Soundbar, Orlando, FL
The Coathangers stopped in Orlando on a flippin’ Tuesday; a Tuesday, and pulled in a respectable crowd and blew the doors off the place. I guess I could just stop here, and leave a bunch of video links and call it good.
But think about this. Tuesday night is the night kids eat free, movies are half off, and there’s still a few antiquated venues flogging ladies night where ladies get plastered for free. So on this most curious of evenings not only did Atlanta’s The Coathangers bring in a good sized crowd, but served up a solid set of punk and garage that was by turns ragged, and tight, and completely irresistible. Touring to support their most recent release, “The Devil You Know,” the band rolled through newer songs, like the eerily compelling “Stranger Danger,” and “Hey Buddy” with the refrain calling up the album title. With a determined urgency the band attacked their instruments on, “F*** the NRA” which instantly became an audience shout along. “Watch Your Back” got a huge response.
All three band members, Julia Kugel (guitar/vocals), Meredith Franco (bass/vocals), Stephanie Luke (drums/vocals), traded out instruments seamlessly throughout the set. They closed out with “Squeaky Tiki,” and solid blast of sound, and absurdity as a squeaky toy is employed and gets a turn on the mic.
The most remarkable thing about seeing the Coathangers kill it tonight was the feeling of anticipation on my way out the door. I can’t wait to see them again.
As for the support acts, I had to miss ‘em, because sometimes when you pretend to be a grown up, you gotta do grown up things, and miss out.
